Radiant Beauty

a clipping about Shelley in 1980

When Shelley became a Charlie's Angel in 1979, there was so much buzz and excitement about the radiant beauty, known worldwide as THE Charlie Girl, becoming part of Charlie's bevy of crime-fighting babes. But when her episodes aired, it seemed she was given less to say than her co-stars. They said she couldn't act. But then how come she did so well in the Love Boat episode she appeared in? It was filmed and aired at around the same time. Consequently, she was given more lines mid-season, but most fans had tuned out by then. She actually did very well in those later episodes. Also, the series had already slipped from #5 to #12 in the ratings by the 3rd season. Shelley's casting actually pulled the ratings up to #18 (her first episode "Love Boat Angels" ranked #1 the week it aired).

Running For A Seat

Shelley in the 1990s

In 1994, Shelley set her sights on a county Democratic Central Committee seat in the Westside and San Fernando Valley district; but she was disqualified. She came down with the flu; so she asked someone else to take over the signature-gathering needed to secure her a seat. But the man who did it didn’t live in the 41st District (a requirement) so it rendered all the signatures he gathered invalid. But Shelley wasn’t disappointed. "My concern is less elective office and politics," she said, "My concern is community service, and there's plenty to do."

A Budding Actress

Shelley in a 1977 publicity pic

Shelley was a well-known Supermodel by the mid-1970s. And like many other Supermodels before her, Hollywood came knocking at her door. So she enrolled at the Herbert Berghof Studios in New York to study acting under Jack Wolzer. She got a memorable cameo role in the 1977 Academy Award winning Woody Allen film Annie Hall where she played a vacuous WASP. In 1978, she all but retired from modeling, appearing exclusively for the Charlie brand, to concentrate on acting.

And Shelley looked pretty in those pastels indeed.

Planning for the Future

a clipping of Shelley from 1979

Shelley became a Supermodel in her teens and 20s. But she knew she couldn't possibly be an in-demand model by her 50s. So she decided to make sure she got an education, so she had something to fall back on when she's more mature. She thought about becoming an archeologist or even a lawyer; but she turned out to be a media consultant for pre- and post-war countries and eventually a Hollywood producer. Not bad.

In 1980, Shelley was at the height of her popularity. She had been known all over the world as THE Charlie Girl in the past years; but in 1979, she became a bona fide superstar due to her casting in the mega hit TV series Charlie's Angels. Shelley was busy as a bee at the time. Not only was she filming scenes for Charlie's Angels, she was doing commercials and print ads for Charlie perfume as well. She divided her time between Los Angeles and New York. But she was a trooper; and she wasn't fazed by challenges. On her junior year at Smith College, she was able to convince the dean to give her credit for an archaeology course she wanted to take at the University of Sydney in Australia. She was able to finish schooling whilst modeling on the side. She was willing to go the extra mile to achieve what she wanted to achieve.

Many versions of the Charlie perfume commercials came out during Shelley's tenure as the brand's image model. One 1980 version had her coming out of a building in a fabulous pantsuit, spreading good feelings (and Charlie perfume) to everyone she passed by on her way to meet a man who had certainly captured her heart. A choir was singing the jingle, and the man she went to meet was no other than male Supermodel Matt Collins (who appeared in another Charlie perfume commercial - the one with  Mel Tormé). Shelley was beyond breathtaking.

The 1980 Summer Olympics was one of the more controversial ones. It was held in Moscow in the Soviet Union. Sixty-five countries boycotted the games because of the Soviet war in Afghanistan, dwindling the participants to just 80 nations. But it was also the first time the games were staged in Eastern Europe, the first time it was held in a socialist country, as well as the first time it was held in a Slavic language-speaking country.

The 1980 Winter Olympics was held stateside though, in Lake Placid, New York. It was the second time it was held there since 1932. It had Shelley Charlie-striding around, passing by Olympic athlete after Olympic athlete approving, applauding and cheering them on. "Let's Go, America!" she shouts at the end of the commercial. (note: Shelley wore high heels during the 1st half of the commercial; but after the shot of the weightlifter, she changed to flats/sneakers so she could run with the girls at the end of the commercial.)

New Opportunity

Shelley in 1979

Shelley became Charlie's Angel no. 5, Tiffany Welles in 1979. Of her new opportunity, she said, "I was surprised by the amount of attention, but I had done a lot of press before. There was so much to do then, so you just deal with it." Not only was she an Angel by then, she was also THE Charlie Girl; so she had a lot on her plate. She had to divide her time between her obligations in L.A. and New York, but she was a trooper.
