All-Weather Coat

Shelley in an ad for Forecaster of Boston, 1977

Shelley appeared in an ad for Forecaster of Boston on 1977. It featured all-weather coats that were a step ahead of the weatherman. She modeled a powder blue full-length coat with a color coordinated paisley lining. And Shelley looked ready for those cold or rainy days.

Modern Needle/Craft 3

Shelley in a spread for Modern Needle/Craft mag, 1971

Shelley appeared on various spreads throughout the mag Modern Needle/Craft in 1971. In one spread, she modeled a Tote Bag anyone could make. The bag, made out of yarn, was a must-have for any young lady in the early '70s. Shelley wore the same turtleneck sweater and smart skirt from a previous spread in the same mag.

'70s Supermodel

Shelley was among a handful of Supermodels who became famous in the 1970s. She appeared in many publications and commercials and was constantly working. And she modeled everything - from makeup to jewelry to high and affordable fashions to mattresses to hair nets and many, many more. Of course, she also modeled the staple in every woman's wardrobe back then - the fur coat, a luxury only few could afford.

Preppy Shelley '78

Shelley's preppy style was evident early in her acting career.

Publicity pictures of her strolling around the city were released in 1978, in time for the screening of her film If Ever I See You Again. Pictures from the same set were used as promotional material when she joined Charlie's Angels. One Spanish mag attached a caption on the pic which said:

"Se rumor a que la esbelta figura y el attractivo personal de Shelley provoco panico en Cheryl Ladd, con quien guarda cierto parecido. Y que, Jaclyn Smith sufrio un ataque de... celos."

which roughly translates to:
"It is rumored that the slim figure and the personal style of Shelley cause a panic attack in Cheryl Ladd, who bears a resemblance to Shelley. And, Jaclyn Smith suffered an attack of ... jealousy."

Oh, what they would write about the Angels back then were so far-fetched.

One of Her Finest

Robert De Niro and Shelley Hack in The King of Comedy, 1983

Shelley starred in one of Martin Scorsese's most underrated films - the 1983 box-office flop The King Of Comedy. Robert De Niro and Jerry Lewis lead the cast of characters that included (aside from Shelley) Sandra Bernhard, Diahnne Abbott and Tony Randall. The film is about a comic who would do anything to gain fame. The subject of the film has become more significant as the years have gone by - with  the "cult of celebrity" becoming more and more widespread. The movie has gained more fans (filmmakers and film buffs alike) decades after its theatrical release. And Shelley turned out one of her finest performances in the film. In fact, it's her work in this film that got her the lead in the cult classic The Stepfather in 1986.

A Good-Time Wardrobe

a closeup of Shelley from a Sears Spring Through Summer 1974 catalog spread

Shelley appeared on many spreads in Sears Spring Through Summer 1974 catalog. In the spread called "Separates featuring... A Good-Time Wardrobe of Casual Knits", she modeled a shirt and skirt ensemble, perfect for summer that season. The shirt had jacquard-patterned collar as well as cuffs. The skirt had an inverted front pleat and two patch pockets. A matching woven belt and a pair of wedge-heeled sandals finished her look. And Shelley looked just fabulous in her summer getup.

Shelley appeared on the pages of Aldens catalog in 1970. In the spread called "Juniors: Put on Two Great Parts", she modeled "The Separates Look" - a layered look that was snapped up with great details. She wore a smart jerkin over a printed blouse and flared mini-skirt ensemble. And Shelley looked snappy in that season's layered look.

Beautiful and Intelligent

Shelley became famous in the  1976 when she became THE Charlie Girl; and in 1979, she became even more famous when she joined the cast of Charlie's Angels. She came in to replace Kate Jackson's empty slot in the hit TV series and was the perfect replacement (everybody was so excited). Not only was she beautiful like Kate, she was smart like Kate as well (and designer Nolan Miller didn't like her, like Kate, as well). Shelley, the intelligent ivy-league Connecticut-bred Supermodel, was a Smith College graduate and had studied archaeology in the University of Sydney in Australia. Beautiful and intelligent, this well-educated mannequin was the perfect choice to replace Charlie's smart Angel.

Troll 1985

A Japanese writeup on the movie Troll, 1985

Shelley appeared in the feature film Troll in 1985. The film starred many past and future television stars aside from Shelley. Past TV stars like Sonny Bono (The Sonny and Cher Comedy Hour) and Gary Sandy (WKRP in Cincinnati) and future TV stars like Michael Moriarty (Law & Order) and Julia Louis-Dreyfus (Seinfeld) were in the film. Mother and daughter June and Anne Lockhart was also part of the cast, as well as Phil Fondacaro who played Torok the Troll. Jenny Beck and pre-teen superstar Noah Hathaway rounded out the cast. Troll was geared towards children and was kept appropriately wholesome. An animated prequel version of the film  entitled Troll: The Rise of Harry Potter Jr. (set for release in 2017) is currently in the works with Patricia Arquette and Baxter Bartlett as voice talents. An animated series follows it in 2018.

A Perry Mason Mystery

Shelley with the cast
of A Perry Mason Mystery: The Case of the Wicked Wives, 1993

In 1993, Shelley starred in the TV movie A Perry Mason Mystery: The Case of the Wicked Wives. It was the first of a string of TV movies to come out after the death of Raymond Burr (Perry Mason himself).  It was a sort of tribute to the late actor. Paul Sorvino played Anthony Caruso, an attorney friend of Mason who temporarily takes over Perry's office while he is away. Beverly Johnson, Kim Alexis, Maud Adams and Kathy Ireland joined Shelley as the "wicked wives".

Ladies of the Night

a writeup about Shelley from 1983 (with Cybill Shepherd and Shelley Smith)

In 1983, Shelley starred in her second TV series Cutter to Houston. But she wasn't the only top model on a prime-time TV series that year, the only Lady in the Night. Cybill Shepherd appeared in The Yellow Rose and Shelley Smith appeared in For Love and Honor. Neither of the three lasted long in the air. Cybill's series is out on DVD though. Let's hope Shelley's Cutter to Houston makes it on DVD as well. Fingers crossed...

Coordinate with Corduroy

Shelley in a spread for Sears Fall and Winter 1973 catalog

Shelley appeared on many spreads in Sears Fall and Winter 1973 catalog. In the spread called "Coordinate with Corduroy", she modeled outfits that were what else - coordinated with corduroy. One outfit was made up of a classic printed plaid long-sleeved shirt, a rib-knit pullover top, a pair of fly-front pants and, of course, a fitted corduroy blazer. Another outfit was made up of a cropped corduroy jacket over a turtleneck pullover and an A-line corduroy skirt. In the inset pic, she modeled the same pants with first - a great white shirt and a smart sleeveless vest- and with second - the same turtleneck pullover she wore with the skirt. And Shelley looked just fabulous in all for them.

She was handpicked by producer/director/leading man Joe Brooks to play the part of artist Jennifer Corly, his love interest in the film. The movie flopped at the box office but has since gained a cult following among romantic-film lovers. It's the perfect movie to watch for Valentine's Day.

Her Supermodel status got the attention of Hollywood and she was cast in the phenomenally successful TV series Charlie's Angels. From that point on, her fame was cemented. Tons of publicity pics of her were taken …both for Hollywood and for Charlie perfume. One of them was a set of photos for Charlie with her carrying an armful of flowers. Lip Service

Shelley got lip service, according to one news bit about her from 1979. Like all the Angels before her, Shelley's makeup, while filming Charlie's Angels, was constantly touched up - and that included her lipstick. The Angels were to look stunning in every frame filmed; so makeup, hairstyle and wardrobe were a top priority in the hit series.

She was cast as the newest Charlie's Angel; and, because of all the publicity surrounding her casting, she became famous enough to be on the same page as fellow Angel Farrah Fawcett and Hollywood legend John Wayne. Shelley was already known as THE Charlie Girl and her casting catapulted her to Hollywood superstardom - even before she filmed anything for the hit TV series.
